What decides your check
- Your highest 35 years of earnings. SSA indexes them for wage growth, averages them and applies a progressive formula. Years with zero earnings count as zero if you have fewer than 35.
- Your claiming age. Full retirement age is 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later. Claiming at 62 pays about 70% of the full benefit; waiting until 70 pays about 124%.
- Cost-of-living adjustments after you claim.
Claiming age at a glance
| Claim at | Share of full benefit |
|---|---|
| 62 | about 70% |
| 67 (full retirement age) | 100% |
| 70 | about 124% |
For a person whose full benefit is $2,071, that is about $1,450 at 62 and $2,568 at 70. Compare claiming ages with the Social Security calculator and the break-even guide.
Is Social Security taxable?
Up to 85% of benefits can be taxable depending on your other income. The income thresholds are not indexed for inflation, so more beneficiaries are affected each year. A senior deduction of up to $6,000 per person aged 65 or older is available for 2025 to 2028, and it phases out at higher incomes.
How much do you need besides Social Security?
The average benefit replaces only part of a typical working income. See how much to retire on $50,000 a year and use the retirement calculator.
